Efficient characterizations of multiphoton states with an ultra-thin optical device

Metasurface enables the generation and manipulation of multiphoton entanglement with flat optics, providing a more efficient platform for large-scale photonic quantum information processing. Here, we show that a single metasurface optical device would allow more efficient characterizations of multiphoton entangled states, such as shadow tomography, which generally requires fast and complicated control of optical setups to perform information-complete measurements, a demanding task using conventional optics. The compact and stable device here allows implementations of general positive operator valued measures with a reduced sample complexity and significantly alleviates the experimental complexity to implement shadow tomography. Integrating self-learning and calibration algorithms, we observe notable advantages in the reconstruction of multiphoton entanglement, including using fewer measurements, having higher accuracy, and being robust against experimental imperfections. Our work unveils the feasibility of metasurface as a favorable integrated optical device for efficient characterization of multiphoton entanglement, and sheds light on scalable photonic quantum technologies with ultra-thin optical devices.

Quantum Light Generation Based on GaN Microring toward Fully On-Chip Source.

An integrated quantum light source is increasingly desirable in large-scale quantum information processing. Despite recent remarkable advances, a new material platform is constantly being explored for the fully on-chip integration of quantum light generation, active and passive manipulation, and detection. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate a gallium nitride (GaN) microring based quantum light generation in the telecom C-band, which has potential toward the monolithic integration of quantum light source. In our demonstration, the GaN microring has a free spectral range of 330GHz and a near-zero anomalous dispersion region of over 100nm. The generation of energy-time entangled photon pair is demonstrated with a typical raw two-photon interference visibility of 95.5±6.5%, which is further configured to generate a heralded single photon with a typical heralded second-order autocorrelation g_{H}^{(2)}(0) of 0.045±0.001. Our results pave the way for developing a chip-scale quantum photonic circuit.

High-fidelity and Robust Stimulated Raman Transition with Parameter-modulated Optimal Control

High-fidelity and robust quantum control is essential for large-scale quantum information processing. The stimulated Raman transition that utilizes second-order coupling effect is a valuable and conventional technique for manipulating states in multi-level quantum systems, but its accuracy is limited by the driving-induced Stark shift. Here, we propose a new parameter-modulated method to effectively compensate the Stark-shift effect, so that we are able to realize high-fidelity and robust stimulated Raman transition with optimal control. Additionally, its robustness against different systematic errors can be further improved via optimization its average fidelity under these specific errors. Besides, our method has potential applications for high-fidelity and robust quantum control in high-order coupling scenarios.

Heralded hyperparallel Fredkin gate with robust fidelity

We propose a heralded hyperparallel Fredkin gate for a three-photon system with the help of the optical property of a quantum dot (QD) embedded in a microcavity. This hyper-Fredkin gate performing both on spatial and polarized degrees of freedom (DoFs) of the three-photon system is equal to double independent three-photon Fredkin gate in one DoF, which has advantages over consuming a less quantum resource, accelerating calculation speed, and inhibiting photon-dissipation noise. Meanwhile, the fidelity of our hyper-Fredkin gate, in principle, approach unit even for the non-identical QD-cavity systems, as the imperfections involved in practical input–output processes of three photons can be converted into heralded errors by clicking the detectors rather than infidelity. Furthermore, the flexibility of the gate can be directly extended to construct some types of hybrid hyper-Fredkin gates with the same high fidelity and efficiency, accessibly performed under existing experimental techniques, as well as used large-scale quantum information processing.

Robust beam splitter with fast quantum state transfer through a topological interface

The Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model, commonly used for robust state transfers through topologically protected edge pumping, has been generalized and exploited to engineer diverse functional quantum devices. Here, we propose to realize a fast topological beam splitter based on a generalized SSH model by accelerating the quantum state transfer (QST) process essentially limited by adiabatic requirements. The scheme involves delicate orchestration of the instantaneous energy spectrum through exponential modulation of nearest neighbor coupling strengths and onsite energies, yielding a significantly accelerated beam splitting process. Due to properties of topological pumping and accelerated QST, the beam splitter exhibits strong robustness against parameter disorders and losses of system. In addition, the model demonstrates good scalability and can be extended to two-dimensional crossed-chain structures to realize a topological router with variable numbers of output ports. Our work provides practical prospects for fast and robust topological QST in feasible quantum devices in large-scale quantum information processing.

Experimental 61-partite entanglement on a three-dimensional photonic chip.

Multipartite entanglements are essential resources for proceeding tasks in quantum information science and technology. However, generating and verifying them present significant challenges, such as the stringent requirements for manipulations and the need for a huge number of building-blocks as the systems scale up. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the heralded multipartite entanglements on a three-dimensional photonic chip. Integrated photonics provide a physically scalable way to achieve an extensive and adjustable architecture. Through sophisticated Hamiltonian engineering, we are able to control the coherent evolution of shared single photon in the multiple spatial modes, dynamically tuning the induced high-order W-states of different orders in a single photonic chip. Using an effective witness, we successfully observe and verify 61-partite quantum entanglements in a 121-site photonic lattice. Our results, together with the single-site-addressable platform, offer new insights into the accessible size of quantum entanglements and may facilitate the developments of large-scale quantum information processing applications.

One-step generation of Bell state on nonlocal acoustics wave resonators assisted by nitrogen-vacancy center ensembles

Recently, quantum information processing (QIP) on acoustics wave resonators (AWRs) has attracted much attention as the quality factor of AWR has been increased to 1011, which means the time of phonons stored in the AWR can reach the order of seconds. To achieve the large-scale QIP on AWRs, one should complete quantum entangled operations on nonlocal AWRs. Different from previous work, we propose a one-step all-resonance scheme to generate Bell states on two nonlocal AWRs coupled to two nitrogen-vacancy center ensembles (linked by an AWR quantum bus) respectively. One-step all-resonance operation makes the scheme easier to be experimentally implemented.

Continuous Raman sideband cooling beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime in a trapped ion chain

We report continuous Raman sideband cooling of a long ion chain close to the motional ground state beyond the Lamb-Dicke (LD) regime. By driving multiple sideband transitions simultaneously, we show that nearly all axial modes of a 24-ion chain are cooled to the ground state, with an LD parameter as large as $\ensuremath{\eta}=1.3$, spanning a frequency bandwidth of 4 MHz. Compared to traditional ground-state cooling methods such as pulsed sideband cooling or electromagnetically-induced-transparency cooling, our method offers two key advantages: disposal of pulse optimization, and a wide bandwidth covering the entire spectrum. This technique contributes as a crucial step for large-scale quantum information processing with linear ion chains and higher dimensions alike, and can be readily generalized to other atomic and molecular systems.

Noise-resistant quantum state compression readout

Qubit measurement is generally the most error-prone operation that degrades the performance of near-term quantum devices, and the exponential decay of readout fidelity severely impedes the development of large-scale quantum information processing. Given these disadvantages, we present a quantum state readout method, named compression readout, that naturally avoids large multi-qubit measurement errors by compressing the quantum state into a single qubit for measurement. Our method generally outperforms direct measurements in terms of accuracy, and the advantage grows with the system size. Moreover, because only one-qubit measurements are performed, our method requires solely a fine readout calibration on one qubit and is free of correlated measurement error, which drastically diminishes the demand for device calibration. These advantages suggest that our method can immediately boost the readout performance of near-term quantum devices and will greatly benefit the development of large-scale quantum computing.

Programmable time-multiplexed squeezed light source.

One of the leading approaches to large-scale quantum information processing (QIP) is the continuous-variable (CV) scheme based on time multiplexing (TM). As a fundamental building block for this approach, quantum light sources to sequentially produce time-multiplexed squeezed-light pulses are required; however, conventional CV TM experiments have used fixed light sources that can only output the squeezed pulses with the same squeezing levels and phases. We here demonstrate a programmable time-multiplexed squeezed light source that can generate sequential squeezed pulses with various squeezing levels and phases at a time interval below 100 ns. The generation pattern can be arbitrarily chosen by software without changing its hardware configuration. This is enabled by using a waveguide optical parametric amplifier and modulating its continuous pump light. Our light source will implement various large-scale CV QIP tasks.

Hardness of Braided Quantum Circuit Optimization in the Surface Code

Large-scale quantum information processing requires the use of quantum error correcting codes to mitigate the effects of noise in quantum devices. Topological error-correcting codes, such as surface codes, are promising candidates as they can be implemented using only local interactions in a two-dimensional array of physical qubits. Procedures such as defect braiding and lattice surgery can then be used to realize a fault-tolerant universal set of gates on the logical space of such topological codes. However, error correction also introduces a significant overhead in computation time, the number of physical qubits, and the number of physical gates. While optimizing fault-tolerant circuits to minimize this overhead is critical, the computational complexity of such optimization problems remains unknown. This ambiguity leaves room for doubt surrounding the most effective methods for compiling fault-tolerant circuits for a large-scale quantum computer. In this paper, we show that the optimization of a special subset of braided quantum circuits is NP-hard by a polynomial-time reduction of the optimization problem into a specific problem called Planar Rectilinear 3SAT.

Enhancing photon generation rate with broadband room-temperature quantum memory

Photons with high generation rate is one of the essential resources for quantum communication, quantum computing and quantum metrology. Due to the naturally memory-built-in feature, the memory-based photon source is a promising route towards large-scale quantum information processing. However, such photon sources are mostly implemented in extremely low-temperature ensembles or isolated systems, limiting its physical scalability. Here we realize a single-photon source based on a far off-resonance Duan-Lukin-Cirac-Zoller quantum memory at broadband and room-temperature regime. By harnessing high-speed feedback control and repeat-until-success write process, the photon generation rate obtains considerable enhancement up to tenfold. Such a memory-enhanced single-photon source, based on the broadband room-temperature quantum memory, suggests a promising way for establishing large-scale quantum memory-enabled network at ambient condition.

Transfer of arbitrary quantum states between separated superconducting cavities via an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy centers

Transfer of quantum states between distant nodes is one of the most important preconditions for realizing large-scale quantum information processing. We here propose two ways to transfer an arbitrary quantum state between two separated superconducting cavities coupled to an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy centers (NV ensemble). By using the double-swap scheme and theory of the dispersive regime, quantum states can be deterministically transferred between two superconducting cavities. With current hybrid circuit QED technology, the numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate that the single-photon state and cat state can be high-fidelity transferred between two superconducting cavities.

Engineering a Phase-Robust Topological Router in a Dimerized Superconducting-Circuit Lattice with Long-Range Hopping and Chiral Symmetry

We propose a scheme to implement the phase-robust topological router based on a one-dimensional dimerized superconducting circuit lattice with long-range hopping. We show that the proposed dimerized superconducting circuit lattice can be mapped into an extended chiral-symmetric Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with long-range hopping, in which the existence of long-range hopping induces a special zero-energy mode. The peculiar distribution of the zero-energy mode enables us to engineer a phase-robust topological router, which can achieve quantum state transfer (QST) from one site (input port) to multiple sites (output ports). Benefiting from the topological protection of chiral symmetry, we demonstrate that the presence of the mild disorder in nearest-neighbor and long-range hopping has no appreciable effects on QST in the lattice. Particularly, after introducing another long-range hopping into the extended SSH lattice, we propose an optimized protocol of the phase-robust topological router, in which the number of the output ports can be efficiently increased. Resorting to the Bose statistical properties of the superconducting circuit lattice, the input port and output ports assisted by the zero-energy mode can be detected via the mean distribution of the photons. Our work breaks the traditional QST form with only one outport by the zero-energy mode and opens a pathway to construct large-scale quantum information processing in the SSH chains with long-range hopping.

Silicon photonic devices for scalable quantum information applications

With high integration density and excellent optical properties, silicon photonics is becoming a promising platform for complete integration and large-scale optical quantum information processing. Scalable quantum information applications need photon generation and detection to be integrated on the same chip, and we have seen that various devices on the silicon photonic chip have been developed for this goal. This paper reviews the relevant research results and state-of-the-art technologies on the silicon photonic chip for scalable quantum applications. Despite the shortcomings, the properties of some components have already met the requirements for further expansion. Furthermore, we point out the challenges ahead and future research directions for on-chip scalable quantum information applications.

Sign switching of superexchange mediated by a few electrons in a nonuniform magnetic field

Long-range interaction between distant spins is an important building block for the realization of a large quantum-dot network in which couplings between pairs of spins can be selectively addressed. Recent experiments on the coherent oscillation of logical states between remote spins facilitated by intermediate electron states were the first step for large-scale quantum information processing. Reaching this ultimate goal requires extensive studies on the superexchange interaction in different quantum-dot spatial arrangements and electron configurations. Here, we consider a linear triple quantum dot with two antiparallel spins in the outer dots forming the logical states while varying numbers of electrons in the middle dot form a mediator, which facilitates the superexchange interaction. We show that the superexchange is enhanced when the number of mediating electrons increases. In addition, we show that forming a four-electron triplet in the mediator dot further enhances the superexchange strength. Our work can be a guide to scale up the quantum-dot array with controllable and dense connectivity.

Tunable coupling of widely separated superconducting qubits: A possible application toward a modular quantum device

In addition to striving to assemble more and more qubits in a single monolithic quantum device, taking a modular design strategy may mitigate numerous engineering challenges for achieving large-scalable quantum processors with superconducting qubits. Nevertheless, a major challenge in the modular quantum device is how to realize high-fidelity entanglement operations on qubits housed in different modules while preserving the desired isolation between modules. In this work, we propose a conceptual design of a modular quantum device, where nearby modules are spatially separated by centimeters. In principle, each module can contain tens of superconducting qubits and can be separately fabricated, characterized, packaged, and replaced. By introducing a bridge module between nearby qubit modules and taking the coupling scheme utilizing a tunable bus, tunable coupling of qubits that are housed in nearby qubit modules could be realized. Given physically reasonable assumptions, we expect that sub-100-ns two-qubit gates for qubits housed in nearby modules, which are spatially separated by more than two centimeters could be obtained. In this way, the inter-module gate operations are promising to be implemented with gate performance comparable with that of intra-module gate operations. Moreover, with the help of through-silicon vias technologies, this long-range coupling scheme may also allow one to implement inter-module couplers in a multi-chip stacked processor. Thus, the tunable longer-range coupling scheme and the proposed modular architecture may provide a promising foundation for solving challenges toward large-scale quantum information processing with superconducting qubits.

Experimental demonstration of free-space two-photon interference.

Quantum interference plays an essential role in understanding the concepts of quantum physics. Moreover, the interference of photons is indispensable for large-scale quantum information processing. With the development of quantum networks, interference of photons transmitted through long-distance fiber channels has been widely implemented. However, quantum interference of photons using free-space channels is still scarce, mainly due to atmospheric turbulence. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with photons transmitted by free-space channels. Two typical photon sources, i.e., correlated photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process and weak coherent states, are employed. A visibility of 0.744 ± 0.013 is observed by interfering with two photons generated in the SPDC process, exceeding the classical limit of 0.5. Our results demonstrate that the quantum property of photons remains even after transmission through unstable free-space channels, indicating the feasibility and potential application of free-space-based quantum interference in quantum information processing.

Multiplexed telecommunication-band quantum networking with atom arrays in optical cavities

The realization of a quantum network node of matter-based qubits compatible with telecom-band operation and large-scale quantum information processing is an outstanding challenge that has limited the potential of elementary quantum networks. We propose a platform for interfacing quantum processors comprising neutral atom arrays with telecom-band photons in a multiplexed network architecture. The use of a large atom array instead of a single atom mitigates the deleterious effects of two-way communication and improves the entanglement rate between two nodes by nearly two orders of magnitude. Further, this system simultaneously provides the ability to perform high-fidelity deterministic gates and readout within each node, opening the door to quantum repeater and purification protocols to enhance the length and fidelity of the network, respectively. Using intermediate nodes as quantum repeaters, we demonstrate the feasibility of entanglement distribution over approximately 1500 km based on realistic assumptions, providing a blueprint for a transcontinental network. Finally, we demonstrate that our platform can distribute approximately 25 Bell pairs over metropolitan distances, which could serve as the backbone of a distributed fault-tolerant quantum computer.

Remote Generation of Magnon Schrödinger Cat State via Magnon-Photon Entanglement

The magnon cat state represents a macroscopic quantum superposition of collective magnetic excitations of large number spins that not only provides fundamental tests of macroscopic quantum effects but also finds applications in quantum metrology and quantum computation. In particular, remote generation and manipulation of Schrödinger cat states are particularly interesting for the development of long-distance and large-scale quantum information processing. Here, we propose an approach to remotely prepare magnon even or odd cat states by performing local non-Gaussian operations on the optical mode that is entangled with the magnon mode through pulsed optomagnonic interaction. By evaluating key properties of the resulting cat states, we show that for experimentally feasible parameters, they are generated with both high fidelity and nonclassicality, as well as with a size large enough to be useful for quantum technologies. Furthermore, the effects of experimental imperfections such as the error of projective measurements and dark count when performing single-photon operations have been discussed, where the lifetime of the created magnon cat states is expected to be t∼1  μs.
